We hope you’ll forgive the typos or grammar issues that may arise as a result. But we believe that our lessons as well as the experience you have when you walk in should be genuine. Flaws and all. After all, that’s what learning music is all about: embracing our humanity and creativity while we play wrong notes, laugh at them, and move on.
So today we are talking about a lot of questions that we often get. So I will dive right in and list them and answer as we go. I’ll use the tried and true “Q&A” format here to help out as well. And we should also note that this is an opinion article written with 20 years of wisdom in running music schools guided by experience and feedback. Your uncle Bob may have a different opinion on something here. But it’s all good.
Q: What age should my kid start music lessons?
A: Great one! We believe that 5 years old is the place where a few key instruments start to make sense for private lessons. Before that we have a toddler program that helps kids 3-5 years old grow an appreciation for the basics of music. We want our kids to love it, right? We don’t want to set them up for failure. But some instruments may be better as they get a little older (10-12) to really grow into like guitar, saxophone, etc.
Q: How often should they practice?
A: Another great one. Parents in Parker, Colorado - here me out. Less but nearly daily is better than more daily or more a few days a week. Get comfortable with the long game. Don’t push them to play more than 10 or 15 minutes at first if they aren’t yet. Warm up to longer sessions at home. Don’t misunderstand! We could preach until the cows come home about the more you play the better you get. But know that this is a new skill. A new hobby. And something competing with an ever-growing mental competition of academics, sports, games, screen time (for many), and so much more. We encourage you to use the word play instead of practice and let them have some small wins along the way. Trust us. You will reap the benefits over time. But music is not like sports where hours a week are necessary. Small chunks, small goals when you sit down are best. “Hey, Oliver - play for me that thing on the piano you like for 5 minutes” and just cheer them on when you hear something nice.
Q: How long should our lessons be?
A: We offer lessons in 30 or 60-minute intervals. Usually we recommend kids under 7 or 8 years old start exclusively with 30 minute classes. Our teachers work to make them fun, engaging, and full of little topics to pass the time in a healthy way. Much more than that at a young age and little ones get a little antsy or unfocused. However, for many students 30-minute just isn't enough time. Enthusiastic students, students with big goals, or those who show a lot more potential in a certain song or skill - we recommend they try the 60-minute option and get more direct playing or singing time with their instructor.
Q: How do recitals help kids?
A: At Parker Music Academy - we do at least 2 recitals every year. Our student concerts are so fun. We structure them like a progress displaying opportunity, not a talent show or competition. For some kids or adults, a small song snippet is all they have. Great. But for others, they can play or sing a full song. Whatever you do, know that being on stage has so many unseen benefits for your child. They have to prepare. That gives them a sense that they have a goal to work towards and a means to share it with you in a packaged or “buttoned up way.” This is very helpful for you as a parent because you get the chance to look down the road a few months and really encourage them in the daily life and ups and downs that are in every new skill. But we could go on and on for this one. Confidence! We love seeing students get on stage and become more confident in themselves. To see them stand a little taller, take a bow, or just smile in front of people they don’t know. All while we encourage uproars of applause as well. It’s all about making sure they grow into adults that can someday walk into a room and feel more at ease with who they are. All through music performance!
Q: How do parents know whether a teacher is a good fit?
A: Great question here. You don’t always know on lesson one if that personality match is right for you. But it’s good to have your expectations be about how much your kid is engaged, enjoying the time, and growing. Be sure to communicate to your teacher what you are liking and not so they can adjust along the way. We go through a lot of effort to deliver the best possible teachers we can find. They have to pass many gates of interviews, screening, background checks, and more. And even then, we love to see how they do as a guest instructor and call parents to learn how the lessons are going with him or her. For you, just keep in mind that some students like strict, others loose. Some love joking, some get right to the point. Be sure to get all you can with us in your lessons by giving us clear and direct feedback. We hope you’ll give it a try and enjoy with hundreds of other Parker families a lesson you look forward to each week.
