Music Tip of the Month: Woodwinds
As winter settles in, cold air and dry indoor heat can take a toll on both you and your woodwind instrument. Cracks, sticky pads, and sluggish key action are more common this time of year, especially for wooden clarinets and flutes. To protect your instrument, avoid exposing it to sudden temperature changes—let it warm up gradually if it’s been in a cold car or case. Use a swab after each playing session to keep moisture from collecting in the bore, and consider using a humidifier in your case to prevent wood from drying out and cracking. For flutists, check cork alignment and key tension regularly, as cold metal can subtly shift how your instrument responds. A little extra care now means a smoother sound and fewer repair surprises later!

Soundtrack of Season
The holidays are full of music—whether it's in the background at the store, on the radio in the car, or part of your favorite movie. This time of year, music sets the mood. And the best part? You get to be a part of it.Whether you’re learning a simple version of a holiday tune or performing something more advanced, winter is a great time to connect your playing to the world around you. Try playing for family at a get-together, recording a piece to share with relatives far away, or even creating your own arrangement of a favorite song. This season, think about putting together your own “soundtrack of the season.” Choose three pieces that feel like winter to you—something joyful, peaceful, cozy, or nostalgic—and make them part of your practice. They don’t have to be holiday songs. They just have to feel right for this time of year.Music is meant to be shared. This winter, let your instrument be part of how you celebrate, reflect, and connect.
